Notes - Denis frequently made a Maquette, a much smaller version, of a work he
proposed to carve from stone. This might have been in conjunction with drawings,
but it helped to resolve the form of the piece before committing the chisel on
a larger scale. Some of these maquettes are the only version of a work as the
scaled up version was never made, others were signed and as such became sculptures
in their own right, while others remained maquettes. However, all were created
by Denis.
