There has always been a tradition for artists to make
their own greeting cards. Most of the artists in St.Ives and Newlyn
produced these over
the years and it is surprising how valuable they have become. Something
as ephemeral as a Christmas card can now sell for thousands
of pounds and it is ironic that provenance is so rarely questioned
as they are nearly always signed!
Denis
was no exception and although they are all prints, of one type
or another, his inspiration as you can see, is drawn mainly from
his sculpture.
The earliest card we have
found
by
Denis is dated 1939 and we know that
the last
card he printed himself was in 1991.
