Terry Frost, an abstract painter and printmaker, was born in Leamington Spa,
Warwickshire. He enlisted in the army in 1939 and was taken prisoner of war
in June 1941. In the POW camp he met Adran Heath who encouraged him to paint.
After World War II in 1945 he attended evening classes at Birmingham School
of Art and in the following year relocated to St Ives, Cornwall where he
attended St. Ives School of Painting. In 1947 he held his first solo exhibition
in Downing’s bookshop in St Ives. He did not paint his first abstract
painting until 1949 and during the next decade was associated with the short-lived
Constructionism movement. For a time, he was a studio assistant to sculptor
