Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975)
Barabara Hepworth, sculptor, painter and printmaker, was born In Wakefield,
Yorkshire and studied at Leeds College of Art, 1919-21 and the Royal College
of Art,1921-24. In 1933 she joined the Abstraction Creation and Unit One.
The abstract work included in Circle (International survey of constructive
art, 1937) edited by Nicholson, Gabo and Martin showed the direction that
her sculpture was moving towards. When World War II broke out, she moved
with Ben Nicholson and her young family to Carbis Bay, Cornwall, subsequently
moving to St Ives where she remained for the rest of her life. She was a
founding member of the Penwith Society of Arts, St Ives.
