Denis Mitchell (1912-1993)
Denis Mitchell a sculptor working in wood, bronze and slate, was born in Wealdstone, London but was raised in the Mumbles, Swansea, South Wales where he was a friend of the poet Dylan Thomas. He attended evening classes at Swansea College of Art, before moving to St. Ives to renovate two cottages. During the war he worked underground at the Geevor tin mine. At the end of the war, on the recommendation of the potter Bernard Leach, he became principal assistant to Barbara Hepworth. He was a founder member of the Penwith Society of arts.
